In the Studio: Playing with shadows

These photos roughly document my recent practice of setting up and lighting different configurations of assemblages in my studio. I have become increasingly intentional and curious in seeking ways to install and illuminate my groups of multimedia “suites” (diptychs, triptychs etc). I have experimented with focused, stationary “spot lighting” or slowly moving lights which cause shadows to shift on and around the hanging or leaning objects. The goal of these experiments is to amplify the immersive, rhythmic experience of the groupings as they riff on / recall recent, distant and imagined memories of walking in the woods or upon treelined streets as day and season shift and are crystalized between branches above.

Like a forest copse, the verse in a poem or the lyrical phrase in a piece of music, Each group of paintings is meant to possess internal unity and tension while also extending and emanating outwards, intermingling in shadow, mood and texture with its surroundings.
