STATEMENT
My mixed-media artworks explore the tension and play between scientific and intuitive understanding. The improvisational, multi-layered studio practices I employ utilize photography, printmaking, painting, sculpture and drawing to synthesize the contrasting languages of expressionist, painterly image making with the didactic conventions of scientific illustrations and field guides. Drawing upon a diverse range of past and present naturalist traditions my work aims to simultaneously capture careful observations of flora and fauna as well as the emotive living energy they transmit as I encounter them in our shared environments.
Continued improvisation and experimentation with materials keeps my work spirited and varied. I enjoy layering transparent and opaque marks and materials as the practice helps me to transmit the visual qualities of the evolving, unfolding, overlapping movements of forms through the space and time of nature and memory.
